Penny University
When Penny University opened about a year ago close to home, I was thrilled to finally have a Specialty Coffee joint in my neck of the woods. Parking there is a complete pain so sometimes I resort to walking a good 10-15 minutes just to get a fix. My favourite dish at Penny University is Turkish Eggs, which comprises 2 poached eggs served on lightly whipped yogurt, topped with homemade spicy Moroccan Harissa (chili paste) and oregano leaves. Served with warm toasted bread, this dish is a simple but comforting meal. The perfectly poached eggs burst open when poked into. The rich yolk that oozed onto the slightly tart and creamy whipped yogurt helped to temper the slight burn of the chili in the Moroccan Harissa. The golden brown toast absorbed the mixture perfectly. This is definitely a Must-Try!
When they first started, Penny University had a limited food menu and one of their most popular items was Nutella Red Velvet Cupcakes. It was always sold out whenever I visited in the past. I finally got my paws on two of them on a rare occasion. As a person who is not terribly fond of sweet food, the cupcake was a little too sweet for my taste at that time. This is great for folks with a sweet tooth though as they fly off the shelves really quickly.
Cool coasters that Penny University used to use when they first openedThe menu at Penny University has since expanded to include a decent offering of all-day breakfast items and a wide variety of cakes, tarts and pastries. I especially enjoy the items that are offered from time to time on the pop-up bakery menu so do keep a lookout on their Facebook page for updates. ;)
LatteI usually request for coffee beans that had been brought to the shop by friends and regulars as I'm not a huge fan of Raven (the blend that's often in the hopper). The latte above was made using Seven Seeds beans (Colombia 50%, El Salvador 30% & Ethiopia 20%). Penny University serves a small but great selection of premium loose leaf teas that had been imported by Smitten Coffee. My favourites are the French Peppermint and Moroccan Rosebuds.
Penny University gets really crowded on weekends so I haven't been able to pop by for a coffee for a while. Perhaps I should try to pay them a visit on a weekday when I'm not working. :)
