RONIN at Hong Kong Street
I've been a fan of RONIN since my first visit during Chinese New Year. The Scrambled Eggs ($9) are perfectly creamy and fluffy and are served on buttered toast with the option of adding on side dishes. I like to add on sides of Grilled Portobello Mushroom ($3.50), Grilled Sausage ($4.50) and Avocado ($3). You have a choice of Grilled Pork Sausage or Grilled Lamb & Feta Cheese Sausage. Having tried both, I love them both but prefer the Lamb & Feta Sausage. If you're not too averse to a slightly lamb-y flavour, definitely try the Lamb & Feta Sausage because the salty and creamy bits of Feta add a lovely contrast to the herbed lamb filling. The Portobello Mushroom that had been grilled with some Rosemary was a lovely and juicy complement to the savoury ingredients on my plate. Having squeezed some lemon juice onto the buttery Avocado chunk, it provided a refreshing touch to the dish. The Scrambled Eggs here are a MUST-TRY!
Pomegranate Tea @ S$5When I visited RONIN yesterday, I was still recovering from a stomach bug and had to stay away from coffee and milk. I ordered a pot of Pomegranate Tea instead. Fruity and tangy, though it didn't give me a kick like coffee does, it was nonetheless a nice alternative for my gastric-stricken tummy. Served in a black, Japanese-style pot, I thought it matched the cafe's name well. Apparently, RONIN refers to a masterless Samurai. Though it was slightly annoying that RONIN doesn't have a menu and one has to listen intently whilst the service staff rattles off what's available, I was appreciative of the attentiveness shown by the service crew who offered to refill my teapot with hot water after clearing our dishes.
Latte @ S$4.20I can't wait to recover so I can once again savour a lovely cup of well-balanced Latte with silky microfoam at RONIN. A Must-Try!
"Wicked" Mocha Mint & Matcha LatteLike The Bravery, RONIN also serves special brews such as "Wicked" which is essentially a Mocha Mint and Matcha Latte. "Wicked" was served with a thick chocolate fudge at the bottom of the cup and one has to stir the chocolate into the coffee for an even mix. As the name promises, this was like a caffeine-laced, liquid version of After Eights. The Matcha Latte also came with a thick Green Tea paste at the bottom of the cup that had to be stirred evenly into the steamed milk. I love stirring mixes and offered to help the friendly couple next to us after observing that the "better half" seemed to be struggling to stir the green tea mix into the milk. Both the Matcha Latte and "Wicked" are also a Must-Try!
The interior at RONINA cosy cafe, it gets full pretty fast at RONIN. With so much going for it (eg. good coffee and food), this is one of my favourite cafes in Singapore.
