Offer on Park Hotel's Mooncakes
Park Hotel recently sent me some mooncakes and told me that they're offering a discount on mooncakes to superfinefeline's readers! Read on for more details:
Black Sesame & White Lotus Paste with Mochi in Snowskin and Sakura Truffle in Snowskin Image reproduced with permission from Park Hotel GroupEven though I usually take some time to work through the different flavours of the mooncakes, I tasted all 7 flavours in 1 sitting and had a little bit of a sugar high for the rest of the day.
Park Hotel's Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes Lychee & Lychee (white), Black Sesame & White Lotus Paste with Mochi (black), Sakura Truffle & White Lotus Paste (pink) and Baileys Truffle & Mint (green)Although I'm not a fan of sweet food, I enjoy Snowskin Mooncakes because they allow chefs to more creativity in terms of flavour combinations.
The Snowskin Mooncakes should be cut immediately after you take them out of the refrigerator to avoid having them get too mushy like the ones I have in the photo here. A new flavour, the Black Sesame with White Lotus Paste & Mochi Mooncake looked really interesting with the gold dust that had been dusted over it. The Mochi (Japanese rice cake) was really sticky (as it's made out of glutinous rice), which caused the Mochi to stick to the knife when cutting. The black sesame-infused white lotus paste had a strong flavour of black sesame and reminded me of a traditional Chinese dessert which consists of glutinous rice balls served in a sweetened black sesame paste. Also a new flavour, the Sakura Truffle & White Lotus Paste mooncake was delightfully floral but a little too sweet for my liking. One of their best-sellers, the Lychee & Lychee mooncake reminded me of an intense Lychee Martini albeit without the alcohol and just a little too sweet. My favourite amongst the Snowskin Mooncakes was one of their best sellers, Baileys Truffle & Mint. The dark chocolate truffle had a hint of Baileys while the tongue tingled with the minty freshness of the mooncake, which was thankfully not too sweet. Somewhat reminiscent of an After-Eight Thin Mint, this is a Must-Try!
Park Hotel's White Lotus & Double Egg Yolk Baked Mooncake @ S$59+ (4 pieces)Moving onto traditional Baked Mooncakes, I started with my favourite version - White Lotus with Double Egg Yolks. Made in a traditional mooncake mould, reading from top to bottom, the 2 Chinese characters within the box indicates that the mooncake was made by Park Hotel. The 2 characters at the bottom of the mooncake indicate that two salted egg yolks have been embedded into the mooncake.
My favourite amongst the 3 flavours of baked mooncakes that I sampled, the saltiness of the salted egg yolk helped to counter the sweetness of the White Lotus Paste. However, I felt that the crust was just a little too thick and too cakey leaving the mooncake feeling dry on the palate.
White Lotus Seed Paste with Macadamia Nuts (Low Sugar) Mooncake @ S$50+ (4 pieces)The White Lotus Seed Traditional Mooncake's crust wasn't as browned as the Double Yolk mooncake leaving it with a slightly less smoky flavour.
Although it was supposed to be a Low Sugar Mooncake, I felt that it was still a little too sweet for my liking.
Park Hotel's Golden Jade with Duo Nuts (Vegetarian) Mooncake @ S$55+ (4 pieces)A new flavour in the baked mooncake menu, the Golden Jade with Duo Nuts Mooncake was created to provide patrons with a lighter and fresher alternative to traditional mooncakes.
This was my least favourite baked mooncake. The white lotus paste had been infused with pandan flavour and dotted with pine nuts and melon seeds. Whilst it was an interesting combination, it was also too sweet and can't compare to the Double Egg Yolk version.
