Buttermilk Waffles & Latte at Strangers' Reunion

I first visited Strangers' Reunion in April last year while recuperating from my broken elbow. Coincidentally, my friend and I bumped into a few local coffee loving friends who introduced us to fellow coffee lovers hailing from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. They were in Singapore to attend Food and Hotel Asia 2012 (FHA 2012). It was literally a strangers' reunion of sorts over coffee.

Since then, I have been visiting Strangers' Reunion for coffee and late breakfast. One day, I decided to break away from my usual savoury late breakfast option and chose Buttermilk Waffles instead. There are 3 choices of toppings for the waffles but I opted for the one with artisan Greek yoghurt and fresh fruits. SL has been raving about the yoghurt for the longest time so I figured it was time to try it. The yoghurt was refreshing without being excessively tart and was sweetened by the organic maple syrup that had been drizzled over the yoghurt, blueberries, sliced strawberries and banana. What I like about the waffles at Strangers' Reunion is that they are freshly made to order and are thus warm and fluffy with a crisp, golden brown crust when served. The smooth and creamy yoghurt adds moisture to the waffle whilst the fruits add little bursts of flavour when bitten into. I'm massively addicted to their waffles! This is definitely a Must-Try!

The hype about Strangers' Reunion is that it was opened by the reigning Singapore National Barista Champion (2011 & 2012), Ryan Tan. However, I've only ever seen him there about twice and in recent months, not at all every time I visit. Nonetheless, the latte here is rich and generally well-balanced every time I visit. It's nice that the quality of the coffee is fairly consistent unlike some other places where it really matters who pulls the shot and makes that cup of coffee.

PS: This post is dedicated to fellow food blogger and coffee lover, Jason, who had also written about Strangers'  Reunion on his blog: "For The Love of Food". His sudden passing last weekend was shocking as I'd only just bumped into him at Nylon Coffee Roasters the week before. Though we didn't know each other very well, we'd been reading and commenting on each other's blogs for 4 years or so and finally met during an event in 2012. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to pig out with him a few times and to savour a few cups of coffee. He was a most pleasant, patient and unassuming person who truly loved food and coffee. I will miss reading his blog updates and bumping into him at specialty coffee joints. RIP, Jason.  :(
