Brunch at Suprette
Weekends are for lazing around and for indulging in lazy brunches with friends. L and I went to check out Suprette, a fairly new restaurant-bar-cafe concept located within a boutique hotel, Kam Leng Hotel, at Jalan Besar.
Shakshuka @ S$19++ Eggs poached in spicy tomato sauce with Feta Cheese, Lamb Sausages & Crusty BreadHaving had some cupcakes prior to this, we weren't terribly hungry. L ordered the Shakshuka, which was served with a thick slice of crusty, warm Baguette. A dish of Middle Eastern origin, the tomato sauce was spiced with cumin and paprika, dotted with cubes of Feta Cheese, topped with 2 poached eggs and a pair of grilled lamb sausages. If you're not a huge fan of lamb (like some of my friends), you may not like the sausages as they had a pretty gamey flavour. The lamb sausages were otherwise tasty without being excessively salty and had a pleasantly smoky flavour from the browned edges. I liked the spicy tomato sauce as it was not heavy on the spices but went perfectly with the fresh and slightly sweet-tasting baguette. This is worth a try if you're in the vicinity.
Corned Beef Hash @ S$14++ served with Fried Eggs, Salad & PicklesI generally love savoury food, so after a morning of sweet cupcakes, I was craving a salty fix. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash, comfort food that I haven't had in years. The corned beef cubes were a little too dry for my liking but the potato cubes were deliciously browned and smoky without being too greasy. The runny egg yolks helped to add some moisture to the dish and to temper the saltiness of the corned beef. I wasn't too keen on the pickled vegetables so I left most of it behind. Pickled vegetables aside, this is worth a try.
Lemon & Raspberry Trifle Pound Cake, Lemon Curd & Whipped CreamAnother friend, J, was in the area and popped by to join us. A regular, he ordered the Lemon & Raspberry Trifle dessert from the dinner menu. I tried a little out of curiosity. It was refreshing and whilst I loved the rich, creamy flavour of the whipped cream and the tartness of the raspberry coulis, I could barely taste the lemon curd. The pound cake added some texture to the dessert although I would prefer if sponge cake had been used in its place. If you love berries and whipped cream as much as I do, then give this dessert a try for a berry creamy fix.
Occupying a small unit on the ground floor of the refurbished old school building, Suprette only seats about 35 people though there are plans underway to open up an al fresco area on the 2nd floor. Suprette serves alc0holic cocktails in addition to regular beverages like juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea. The people behind this place seem pretty serious about their drinks so I guess I shall have to return to try some of the cocktails soon. For those who are into craft beers, they'll be brewing their own beer soon albeit in very limited quantities.
