Gyoza no Ohsho Singapore
I was craving Ramen yesterday and so I had dinner at Gyoza no Ohsho at Cuppage Plaza. This is SJ's favourite ramen place and due to her influence, I find myself craving ramen ever so often these days. I had the Gyoza (Japanese Pot Stickers) set with Pirikara Miso Ramen (spicy miso ramen) @ S$15. What I like about the gyozas here is that they're not exceedingly browned such that the charred edges have a bitter flavour but are done to just the right level of browness that imparts a smoky flavour to the juicy filling of the gyoza.
I love to dunk my gyoza into the spicy gyoza dipping sauce that they serve here. I like the spicy, tart yet salty flavour of the dipping sauce and how it complements the sweet flavour of the filling.
That was followed by a huge steaming bowl of Pirikara Miso Ramen, essentially ramen served with a spicy miso-based soup. I love this dish because the spice factor is not excessive though some of my friends would beg to differ. I also like that they're reasonably generous with the ingredients and often have difficulty (yes, despite my big appetite) finishing the whole bowl especially after eating a whole serving of gyoza. The soup base is a little salty due to the miso but this is counterbalanced by the spiciness of the chili paste that has been added into the soup as well as the sweetness of the minced pork bits which make up part of the topping for the dish.
I also like this dish because the strands of ramen are firm to the bite and are not excessively soft from overcooking. I also like to top mouthfuls of ramen with the crushed chili sauce that is available at every table. As you may already have figured out, I absolutely love chili and spices!
This place has a fairly loyal following both with locals and with the Japanese expatriates. The kitchen staff are young, enthusiastic Chinese men (nope, they're not Japanese) who cheerily whip up a meal while sometimes teasing each other in Mandarin. If you have a craving for spicy ramen whilst shopping in Orchard and do not mind a coffeeshop environment, do give this place a try but be forewarned that they have limited seats available. They also do takeaways and it seems as if the takeaway business is just as brisk as that for dine-in customers.
