Nanyang Xiao Long Bao at Kallang Bahru
Nanyang Xiao Long Bao has been operating for the past 4 months from a stall at Kallang Bahru Market Hawker Centre. Though it's fairly close to home, I never knew about this hawker centre till I saw PE's check-in on Facebook today.
Nanyang Xiao Long Bao 南洋小笼包 @ S$5His photos of the made-to-order Xiao Long Bao within a heartland hawker centre were too alluring to ignore. Within hours, I was chomping down on some in addition to a bowl of noodles. If you've been reading my blog for a while, you might have probably read a few posts where I declare my love for dumplings, especially Xiao Long Bao! I love picking up a delicate soup-filled Xiao Long Bao, placing it onto my spoon, then poking a little hole in the thin skin of the dumpling to let the soup flow out onto the spoon. After savouring the soup, I'd add julienned ginger that had been soaked in black vinegar on top of the dumpling before biting into it (temperature permitting).
If you're eating Xiao Long Bao for the first time, do take note that the soup is usually so hot that you could scald the tongue and throat if you popped the entire dumpling into your mouth without allowing it to cool down a little. The Xiao Long Bao here was sweet without a strong porky odour. So unlike the ones that I had at various other popular places.
We had ordered the Nanyang Xiao Long Bao, which features two flavours - Original and Cheese (the ones with the yellow skin). Though the cheese-flavoured Xiao Long Bao was quite tasty, I preferred the Original flavour as it showcased the natural sweetness of the pork filling and broth well. Coupled with a thin, pliable skin, the Xiao Long Bao here is definitely a Must-Try!
