Wings World - Buffalo Wings in Katong

My hood just got a little more interesting with the addition of Wings World, a Buffalo Wings joint. Wings World is a family-run restaurant that specializes in preparing American-style chicken wings tossed in a wide variety of home-made sauces and dry seasoning rubs.

* Each portion comes with celery, carrot & blue cheese dip

I used to have to drive or cycle to Sembawang for decent Buffalo Wings so I was thrilled at the prospect of being able to get a fix in my neck of the woods. Wings World makes their own sauces and rubs. We were told that they're still developing new recipes for new sauces and rubs. The Mango Habanero sauce sounded interesting so I had to try some. It tasted a little tangy and sweet but lacked the burn that I was seeking. I didn't get to try the Asian Zing flavour but was told that it was not significantly discernible from the Mango Habanero sauce. If your mouth is watering for sauce-coated wings, definitely go for the Buffalo Wings. The Buffalo Wings at Wings World comes in 4 levels of spiciness: Mild, Medium, Hot and Blazin'. We tried the Hot Buffalo Wings which wasn't spicy enough for me. If you love spicy food like I do, you might want to order the Blazin' version instead. The Buffalo Wings here are a Must-Try!

Wings World's Menu Board

The menu is fairly simple with 10 different flavours of chicken wings (5 tossed in sauces & 5 dusted with dry-seasoning). Diners get to jazz up their basket of wings with a selection of different flavours (minimum 3 pieces per flavour) and choose between winglets, drumlets or both. In addition to wings, Wings World offers wraps and sides such as seasoned fries, coleslaw, potato salad and pasta salad. Each order of wings is accompanied by celery and carrot sticks with a choice of homemade Blue Cheese or Ranch Dressing.

The seasoned fries were tasty with a spicy kick. I preferred the coleslaw as it was refreshing due to the use of tangy Apple Cider Vinegar in its preparation. I was told that apparently some of the customers didn't like it because of the Apple Cider Vinegar but I thought that the piquant flavour helped to whet the appetite and lighten the greasiness of the fried food.

How did the dry seasoning go? The Rajin Cajun and Vurry Curry dry seasoning that we tried were salty but didn't lend much spicy flavour to the wings. Furthermore, the wings were a little small in size and so when fried to a crisp to ensure a crunchy exterior, rendered the final product dry. This wasn't helped by the dry seasoning. We were told that we should eat the wings while they're hot as the cooling process causes the chicken to dry out more. Perhaps, it was because we were so busy taking pictures that when we ate the still warm wings, part of the remaining moisture had been removed by evaporating steam but even then it seemed a little dry as warm fried chicken should still have some moisture closer to the bone. We told the folks at Wings World what we thought of the wing size and moisture level. The guys told us that they're still ironing out consistency issues with their supplier as apparently the sizes of the wings in each batch can vary quite a bit. The usual teething problems that plague every new food outlet, I guess.

The Potato Salad is also made in-house and though it wasn't stodgy nor excessively creamy, I still preferred the Coleslaw for its refreshing flavour and bite. If you love beers with your Buffalo Wings, you'd be glad to know that it's Happy Hour all day at Wings World. The selection of beer is currently limited to the usual suspects like Tiger, Corona, Hoegaarden, Heineken and Carlsberg. I hope they'll offer some craft beers soon!

Wings World is a casual dining restaurant located along the same stretch of shophouses as Chin Mee Chin Confectionary. Occupying the shop next to 328 Katong Laksa, parking can be a bit of a problem in the area.

I suppose this is why they are offering diners a Drive-by Wings Pickup Service. Call to pre-order, drive up to kerb next to the shop and the staff will run out with your order! How convenient!
