Sin Hoi Sai

Had dinner with my parents a couple of weeks back at Sin Hoi Sai. It was a rare occasion that we got to dine together on a weekday evening as I usually work late. We started with a dish of Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves, which was pretty tasty and really spicy! I like my sambal vegetables to be HOT HOT HOT!

That was followed by a portion of Deep-Fried Seafood Tofu. It was not excessively oily and was fairly tasty but it was definitely not the best that I've had. Nonetheless, its fairly good so if you're not a picky eater, you're probably going to enjoy it alot more than I did.

That was followed by an awfully sinful plate of Fried Beehoon with Stewed Pork Knuckle. I must say that this dish is pretty darn good and despite images of my doctor reminding me to stay away from sinfully oily dishes, I figured that just a little bowl of beehoon shouldn't do that much harm, right? :) I like this dish because the beehoon is not soggy but yet has absorbed the flavour of the stewed pork knuckle such that each bite was very tasty & had us three going ummm...hmmm...... What I also like about this dish is that it was not excessively oily unlike the versions that I've tried at some other establishments. Those of you out there who spend your mornings queuing to buy packets of Fried Beehoon from a particular coffeeshop in The Arcade (opposite Hans), you have to give this beehoon a try too. Its a less oily version that's only available at night. This is definitely a MUST-TRY!

That was followed by the dish that I usually have at Sin Hoi Sai, Fish Slice Beehoon with Bitter Gourd. This was the dish that made me a loyal customer. I was early for a church gathering and was very hungry (as usual). I looked at the menu and saw Fish Slice Beehoon but was also craving bitter gourd, so I asked if I could have the dish modified. The lady boss and another young lady (not sure if she's the boss' daughter) were very friendly and accomodating. Since then whenever I went there, they would ask if I wanted the same dish. I usually ordered the same thing as my church mates noted. PC and NL like the Beef Horfun at this place too but though I've tried it and liked it, I still preferred my fav combo because it made me feel like I was eating healthy even though we sometimes ordered less healthy dishes to go with it. :) I like the freshness of the fish, the tastiness of the soup, the smoothness of the beehoon and the subtle bitterness of the bitter gourd. Its great but would be much better with a little Shaoxing wine...hmm...not that am alcoholic or something *hic*

That was followed by Guinness Pork Ribs. Though this picture doesn't do the dish justice, it was very tasty and tender. We enjoyed it immensely and my mum has gotten so hooked onto it that she sometimes makes me pick up a large packet of it for family gatherings etc. This is a MUST-TRY!

What I also love about this place is that they allow me to place my orders via phone to be picked up about half an hour later. This saves me the boredom of sitting around and twiddling my thumbs while waiting for the food to be ready.
