How I Started My Small Business, Serendipitous Confections
Last Christmas, I made Hot Chocolate Bombs as edible gifts after watching YouTube videos that had me convinced that it was easy. In my last blog post, I shared that making hot chocolate bombs was a lot harder than it looked. It didn’t help that I opted to use gourmet French and Belgian chocolate couverture that cost a few times more than melting chocolate wafers or candy melts and were harder to handle. Gourmet chocolate couverture needs to be tempered correctly else the chocolate would not pop out of the mold amongst many other things that could go wrong with the chocolate shells. I nearly gave up but I was glad that my friends were very appreciative of my effort and some wanted to buy more to give to other friends. Thus, my small business was born after conducting online research and consulting various professionals.
Just as this blog began as a passion project and vehicle for self-expression in 2006, Serendipitous Confections is a great avenue for me to create elegant and delicious creations for a discerning clientele while taking my mind off grad school stress. Starting and running a small business is stressful but I kept reminding myself of the other reason why I wanted to give this a try. I had shared with some of my coursemates and lecturer that I wanted to start a small business so that I may be able to help future social work clients who may wish to start their own small businesses. They have been really supportive and one of my coursemates placed one of my largest orders when I was starting out.
I am so grateful to all the people who have supported me on my entrepreneurial journey this year and I hope to be able to delight you with my creations like the recent series of breakable chocolate eggs with seasonal decorations and custom fillings.
