Seafood Fiesta at Plaza Brasserie

I was invited to check out Seafood Fiesta at Plaza Brasserie last weekend. Available till 31 May, Seafood Fiesta offers diners a wide selection of seafood both from the buffet line and cooked to order at the "live" stations.

Tako Sushi

In addition to buffet staples of salad, sashimi, sushi and chilled seafood such as Tiger Prawns, Australian Queen Scallops, Oysters, Black Mussels and Flower Crabs; diners can select from a range of cooked dishes or daily specials prepared a la minute. Not entirely crazy about seafood? The selection includes other items such as duck, chicken and pork.

Stir-fried Crab with Salted Egg Yolk

What's a seafood feast without succulent crab? Stir-fried with a fragrant mix of salted egg yolk and fried curry leaves, the dish was tasty but just a little too sweet for my liking.

Sambal Hae Bee Hiam Prawns

One of my favourite dishes for the evening was the Sambal Hae Bee Hiam Prawns. Hae Bee Hiam is the local name (in Hokkien) for a spicy dried shrimp chili paste. Just the right amount of heat and saltiness, this is a Must-Try!

Steamed Sea Bass with Nonya Sauce

One of the specials is Nonya-style Sea Bass that had been steamed on a lotus leaf for added flavour. The sauce was a little too sweet for my liking but if you have a sweet tooth, you might enjoy this dish.

Vietnamese White Clams in Thai Chili Sauce

Here's another special for folks with a sweet tooth, Vietnamese White Clams cooked in Thai Chili Sauce. Even though I'm not a fan of Thai chili sauce because it is too sweet for my taste, I enjoyed the firm morsel of white clam that clung onto the shell.

Southern Bay Clams in Black Bean Sauce

If you love clams and the umami-rich flavour of fermented black beans, you'll love this special dish of Southern Bay Clams cooked in Black Bean Sauce. I like savoury food so the saltiness (though not excessively so) of the black bean sauce appealed to me. This special is definitely worth a try if it's available when you visit.

Battle of the clams

To give you an idea of how large the Southern Bay Clam is, here's a picture of it next to a Vietnamese White Clam.

Sambal Stingray in Otah-style
Sambal Stingray

Do you love Sambal Stingray? The version here is presented in a different manner than the one most Singaporeans are accustomed to. Here, a slimmer chunk of stingray is wrapped in banana leaves (like otah). The stingray was great on its own but I didn't like the Chinchalok (fermented shrimp) that was served here as it tasted watered down and had just a little too much tamarind pulp (assam) juice added to it. I prefer Chinchalok to be mixed with freshly squeezed local Calamansi (aka Limau Kasturi) juice, sliced fresh Bombay onions and sliced chili padi.

Laksa Lemak at Plaza Brasserie, PARKROYAL
Laksa Lemak

I love carbs, especially noodles so I couldn't resist trying the Laksa Lemak. Though my dining companions loved it, I thought the gravy in my bowl was a little too watered down. Perhaps, the cook had not drained my thick beehoon (rice vermicelli) sufficiently before adding the spicy coconut milk-based gravy over it. It was a little too bland for my taste so I added more chili for a stronger flavour.

Penang Char Kway Teow

This was awesome! It tasted very much like the ones that I enjoyed in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca and was my favourite dish for the evening. Definitely a Must-Try!
