Octopoke & Burger at Jewel Cafe & Bar
I visited newly opened Jewel Cafe and Bar for a light dinner last evening. A branch of my favourite coffee joint in the Shenton Way area, Jewel Coffee, Jewel Cafe and Bar was opened on 15 March 2013.
Shio-Koji Octopoke @ S$12 Octopus tossed in shio-koji, wasabi, extra virgin oil, avocado & ginger-flowerI was quite hungry when I arrived so I ordered a Shio-Koji Octopoke for my starter. Served as a Timbale with a base of diced avocado and diced boiled octopus that had been tossed with shio-koji (Japanese salted rice malt), wasabi (Japanese horseradish), extra virgin olive oil and ginger-flower. Though I'm generally not a huge fan of octopus, I enjoyed this dish as it was refreshing. It tasted like an octopus ceviche with Japanese and South East Asian influences. I loved the slightly spicy and tart flavour of the dressing that flavoured the firm yet tender octopus. It went well with the creamy flavour of the avocado. This is a Must-Try!
Port & Blue Cheese Burger @ S$20 Onion caramelised in port reduction, chunks of aged Stilton & our own secret "magic" dust mixI tried the popular Port & Blue Cheese Burger. The thick burger patty, that sat between the fluffy and toasted burger buns, was juicy and tasty on its own.
I would have preferred a little more Stilton cheese on my burger patty for a slightly stronger blue cheese flavour. Though the onions were not as caramelised as I would have liked, they were nonetheless tasty with the rich sweetness of port. Served with a salad that had been dressed with reduced aged balsamic vinegar, the burger was too much for me to finish. This should feed those with hearty appetites.
As I hadn't been sleeping well for the past few days, I decided to skip coffee for the evening and come back for some on another occasion. If you're wondering where this cafe is located, it's just next to Liberty Coffee.
