Mee Siam & Yam Cake @ Cilantro - Old Airport Road Hawker Centre
superfinefeline
My family and I chanced upon an interesting stall at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre on a Sunday afternoon. The stark and minimalistic signboard caught our attention as it was a refreshing change from the usual garish-looking ones. The stall occupies 2 units and is called Cilantro Modern Asia.com
Mee Siam @ S$3
Mee Siam is one of my parent's favourite noodle dishes. My mum had to order some to try. Mee Siam (translated as: Siamese noodles) is a one-dish meal of rice vermicelli (beehoon) served in a spicy, sour and sweet gravy with toppings of dried beancurd, sections of hard-boiled egg and spring onions. The dish originated in Thailand hence it was named after "Siam" (the country's original name before it was changed to Thailand).
My mum loved it and said that it had the right balance of sweetness, tartness and spiciness. She felt that it was superior to the one sold at the famous Mee Siam stall in the basement foodcourt of Parkway Parade (a suburban shopping mall). I had to try a little to satisfy my curiosity even though I am not a fan of Mee Siam. Most versions I've had were either too sweet or too sour. She was right, it tasted pretty darned good. This dish is worth a try if you're a Mee Siam fan.
Pan-Fried Salami Yam Cake with XO Sauce @ S$3.50
I love pan-fried yam cake so I had to order a portion to try. Though I could barely taste the salami bits, I loved the yam cake's texture and flavour. The texture was soft and was not rubbery, unlike the ones that are commonly found these days. The surfaces were crisp and the slices of yam cake were not swimming in oil. Whilst the XO sauce added a touch of spiciness, I preferred to eat the yam cake on its own so that I can savour its unadulterated taste. This is a
